Lebanon’s humanitarian crisis amid ongoing conflict
Lebanon is enduring a profound humanitarian crisis due to escalating conflicts, particularly in its southern regions. The hostilities have led to significant civilian casualties, widespread displacement, and extensive infrastructure damage, severely impacting the nation’s socio-economic fabric.
The conflict has resulted in a tragic loss of civilian lives. According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health, over 2,083 conflict-related deaths and 9,869 injuries have been reported since October 8, 2023. The violence has also forced approximately 1.2 million people to flee their homes, marking the most significant wave of displacement in Lebanon in decades.
UNICEF reports that more than 200 children have been killed and 1,100 injured in Lebanon over the past two months. The organisation is providing psychosocial support, medical supplies, meals, and sleeping kits to displaced children, emphasising the urgent need for intervention to protect the most vulnerable.
The ongoing hostilities have caused extensive damage to Lebanon’s infrastructure, which was poor to begin with. The World Bank estimates that the conflict has resulted in physical damages and economic losses totalling approximately $8.5 billion. Critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and residential buildings, has been destroyed, further exacerbating the humanitarian situation. In a similar vein, the World Health Organisation reports that attacks on hospitals and health workers have jeopardised the provision of health services, with 100 out of 207 primary healthcare centres and dispensaries in conflict-affected areas now closed. This has left many without access to essential medical care amid the crisis.
The international community has responded with humanitarian aid. The European Union has pledged an additional €30 million to support displaced populations in Lebanon, bringing its total humanitarian assistance to over €100 million in 2024.
However, the scale of the crisis necessitates further support to address the growing needs.
