Lebanon’s children are displaced again

Across Lebanon, 350,000 children are currently waking up to a living nightmare. For many of these young souls, this isn’t their first experience with loss; it is the second time in just two years they have been forced to flee their homes.

As the humanitarian situation escalates, the reality for families on the ground has reached a breaking point. Here is what the crisis looks like for the most vulnerable.

A Crisis of Staggering Scale

The sheer volume of this displacement is difficult to comprehend. Out of more than 1 million people recently displaced in Lebanon, roughly one-third 350,000 are children. This isn’t just a physical move; it is a repeated trauma. For a child who lost everything in 2024, losing it all again now creates a cycle of instability that is hard to break.

The Reality of Life in Collective Shelters

Currently, over 45,000 children are seeking refuge in collective shelters, the majority of which are repurposed schools. These environments are far from “homes.” They are:

  • Overcrowded and Under-resourced: Facilities designed for learning are being stretched to house thousands.
  • Lacking Privacy: Families have little to no private space to process their grief or care for their children.
  • Confined and Uncertain: Living in close quarters with strangers adds an extra layer of stress to an already volatile situation.

The Invisible Toll: Psychological Strain

Displacement is about more than just moving from point A to point B. It is the cumulative strain on a child’s mind. Caregivers are reporting a significant impact on children’s emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and development. When safety is stripped away repeatedly, the psychological wounds can outlast the physical ones.

Survival Requires More Than a Roof

While immediate safety is the priority, families are struggling to maintain their dignity. True humanitarian aid must provide more than just a ceiling; it must offer mental health support and the necessities required to survive with a sense of self-worth while navigating constant uncertainty.

How Your Charity Can Make a Difference

At UK Care for Children, we are committed to standing by these families. With your generosity, we are focusing our efforts on three critical pillars:

  • Better Resources: Improving the living conditions and supplies within collective shelters.
  • Emotional Recovery: Providing long-term mental health support to help children process their trauma.
  • Caregiver Support: Addressing the basic needs of parents and guardians so they can better care for their children.

Support Lebanon’s Children Today

No child deserves to live in a perpetual cycle of displacement. We must prioritise their safety, their dignity, and their future today.
