Caring for dignity: How UKC4C supports elderly refugees in Lebanon
In the heart of Lebanon’s refugee camps, where displacement and hardship have become a daily reality, elderly individuals often find themselves isolated and vulnerable.
Recognising this pressing need, UK Care for Children (UKC4C) created the Elderly Sitters programme – a compassionate initiative aimed at restoring dignity, companionship, and essential care to elderly refugees across Lebanon.
A bridge between generations
The Elderly Sitters programme operates in key regions including Beirut, Saida, Tyre, Tripoli, and the Beqaa Valley. At its core, the programme employs 57 dedicated young caregivers who commit four hours daily to support elderly individuals. These caregivers assist with daily tasks such as cleaning, cooking, personal hygiene, and medication reminders, enabling the elderly to maintain their independence and dignity.
Beyond practical assistance, the programme fosters meaningful intergenerational connections. Caregivers provide companionship, engage in conversations, and participate in activities that alleviate loneliness and promote emotional well-being. This approach not only benefits the elderly but also instils empathy and a sense of community among the youth.
To ensure the safety and effectiveness of care, caregivers receive specialised first aid training in collaboration with Al Shifaa, equipping them with the skills necessary to support the unique needs of the elderly.
The impact of the Elderly Sitters programme is best expressed through the words of those it serves:
“It’s my first time I go out since a year, except for seeing doctors. I met my friends during the activities and made new ones. We laughed, shared memories, and enjoyed our time. I felt alive again!”
— Abo Nidal, 81 years old
