Rising challenges for Syrian refugees in Lebanon

The Syrian civil war, which has spanned over a decade, has forced millions of people to seek refuge in neighbouring countries. Lebanon, a small nation with its own economic challenges, is hosting over 1.5 million Syrian refugees. The situation for these refugees is becoming increasingly dire, with recent reports highlighting worsening living conditions and dwindling hopes for a return to Syria.

A recent report by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) indicates that more than 90% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon live in extreme poverty. With the Lebanese economy in crisis, the pressure on refugee families has intensified. Basic necessities such as food, shelter, and healthcare are becoming increasingly inaccessible. Many refugees live in overcrowded camps and inadequate housing, where they struggle to meet their daily needs.

Restrictive policies that limit refugees’ access to the labour market further compound the economic challenges. This has led to an increase in child labour as families desperately try to make ends meet. Educational opportunities are also limited, leaving many children without access to schooling and the chance for a brighter future.

Decreasing Hope for Return

Despite these harsh conditions, the hope of returning to Syria in the near future remains bleak for most refugees. According to UNHCR’s annual intention survey, fewer than 2% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon envision returning to Syria in the next 12 months. The ongoing conflict and instability in Syria, along with fears of persecution and violence, continue to deter refugees from considering a return.

The Need for Continued Support

In light of these challenges, the international community must maintain support for refugees in Lebanon. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and humanitarian groups are working tirelessly to provide essential aid, but the scale of need is immense. Organizations like UK Care for Children (UKC4C) are pivotal in offering assistance through educational programs and healthcare services.

UKC4C is committed to helping refugee children in Lebanon by improving access to education and providing essential healthcare services. These efforts are vital for alleviating refugees’ immediate quality of life and building a foundation for a more hopeful future.
