Why is Zakat 2.5 percent?
There are numerous Hadiths where companions explained the Prophets actions with regards to Zakat.
For example one such Hadith is:
“Ibn Maajah (1791) narrated from Ibn ‘Umar and ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to take from every twenty dinars or more, half a dinar, and from forty dinars, one dinar.”
This is equivalent to 2.5%
Please note that the 2.5% rate only applies to cash, gold and silver, and commercial items. There are other rates for farm and mining produce, and for animals.
