Physiotherapy Department

Bringing Accessible and Affordable Rehabilitation Services to Disabled Refugees

The Physiotherapy Project aimed to address the critical lack of rehabilitation services for disabled Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, particularly in the Burj Al-Shemali camp. With over 8,500 disabled individuals facing severe economic and living conditions, the need for comprehensive health services was urgent.

Disabled Palestinian refugees often struggled to access appropriate health services due to their status as “foreigners” or “refugees.” Existing support from UNRWA and various NGOs was insufficient, scattered, and unsustainable. This project focused on equipping the physiotherapy department at Al-Borj Medical Center, providing essential care to those in need.

The project offered affordable and effective physical therapy to help relieve pain and improve mobility for disabled individuals, the elderly, and those recovering from injuries or surgeries. By ensuring ongoing support for patients with chronic conditions, disabilities, and post-surgical needs, we aimed to reduce the need for high-cost treatments. Establishing a physiotherapy clinic within the Burj Al-Shemali camp reduced transportation costs and made healthcare more accessible to residents.

By making physiotherapy more affordable for patients and providing necessary sessions to a large number of individuals, including those with disabilities, children, women, and the elderly, we maintained consistent health care for people with disabilities and chronic diseases. Offering a nearby clinic for residents minimized transportation expenses and made regular treatment more feasible.

The support we received enabled us to equip the physiotherapy department with the necessary tools and resources to serve the disabled refugee patients in the camp and surrounding areas. As a result, we significantly improved the quality of life for these individuals, ensuring they received the care and rehabilitation they needed within their community. This project stands as a testament to the power of collective effort and the profound impact of community support.
